::  Greater Bethel A.M.E. Church
245 NW 8th Street
Years Built: 1927-1943
Architect/Builder: John Sculthorpe/H. S. Bragg
Date Designated: 1988

b. Greater Bethel A.M.E. Church is the home of one of Miami's oldest African-American congregations, organized in March 1896, three months before the city was incorporated. Since its founding, the church has included some of Miami's most prominent African-American residents among its members. Although construction began in 1927 on this massive Mediterranean Revival style church, the building was not completed until 1943 due to the congregation's “pay-as-you-go” policy. Greater Bethel A.M.E. Church was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1992.
