The City of Miami welcomes you to the historic preservation program
website. The historic preservation program promotes the identification,
evaluation, rehabilitation, adaptive use, and restoration of the City's
historic, architectural, and archeological heritage. The preservation program is
regulated in
Chapter 23 of the City Code.
This website features detailed information about the City's locally designated
historic sites and districts; the process
and criteria related to the designation
of historic sites and districts; and Design Guidelines and Standards for
obtaining Certificates of Appropriateness (COA)
for new construction, alterations, additions, relocations, or demolitions
within a historic site, district, or archeological zone.
As you tour the website, view the unique built environment that illustrates
the City's history, distinctive architecture, and cultural diversity, and
learn ways to preserve and protect Miami's irreplaceable and invaluable
cultural resources.
The City of Miami's Historic and
Environmental Preservation Board (HEPB)
has adopted the Secretary of the Interior's
Standards for Rehabilitation as the
foundation for decisions regarding
modifications to historic buildings. The
"Standards" encourage the retention and
preservation of historic buildings by
respecting architectural design, materials,
and workmanship.
The HEPB has also adopted special
standards and guidelines to provide more
specific information to property owners
about particular items and issues. The design
guidelines include both general information
applicable to all designated historic buildings,
and supplemental information developed for
specific historic districts, such as Morningside
and MiMo/Biscayne Boulevard.
