a. Originally known as the Miami Daily News Tower, this 17-story building
is one of the most impressive landmarks on the city's skyline. Designed
by the nationally known firm of Schultze and Weaver, its Mediterranean
Revival architecture was inspired by the
Giralda Tower in Seville, Spain. The building was renamed Freedom Tower
during the 1960s, when it served as the Cuban Refugee Emergency Center
and became a symbol of liberty for Cuban immigrants. Freedom Tower was
listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.
