a. With projecting arcades, canopies, and open balconies, the Chaille
Block provides a unique record of commercial design in Miami. Comprised
of five Masonry Vernacular buildings constructed during the first decades
of the twentieth century, it is the only intact downtown commercial streetscape
dating from the 1910s. The front portions of the Chaille Block buildings
were incorporated into the design of the Federal Detention
Center, built by the Federal Bureau of Prisons. These five buildings were
listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.
